Snow days

So here in Colorado the past few days we have reached 8-12 inches of snow, schools were closed etc...
We stayed open and closed an hour early. Business was at a dead stop, slowly picking up again today.

For those that experience heavy snow fall, do you stay open or close on these days?

I only stayed open for my current clients who chose to drive in and tan on a cold day. Haven't got any complaints yet for closing early. :)

Thanks!

Re: Snow days

Depends. Around here a snow day can be trigged if the rural buses cant make it into town due to poor county roads. Yet the city itself may be fine. In that case regular hours. But if other things are being cancelled, such as City hall, etc. And other businesses, especially national chains, close then I close too. If I am the one at the salon working then I stay until I think if I stay any longer I myself could not make it home.

You will find that no matter the conditions, someone may complain! Two years ago I was out of town in the Mississippi valley and snowed in at the house. The storm reached the salon across the other side of the state. Given the severity of what was happening on one side of the state, people on the other knew it was going to be bad. So my employee calls and I tell him to close up and get home (which for him is an hour away). So get this. HUGE blizzard. Everything shutdown. Its CHRISTMAS EVE and I still get this "client" (I can use other words) that comes in complaining how she "drove ALL the way across town..." to tan. She also make a big stink that the least we could have done was change the voicemail message, which quite frankly I cant figure out let alone let an employee mess it up for the holiday break.

She was banned.

Re: Snow days

its very rare we close due to snow storms....and we get them! it just seems in the dead of winter...any extra chance a client gets, to get in to tan, they do. especially during storms :) now, could you let a staff memeber leave and run it with one...of course. but, i say, stay open.

Re: Snow days

If its that bad and it has been the last 2 years,I close up shop, throw a sign on the door and leave a message on the machine.

Last year we got over a foot overnight and it was drifting 3 ft,all the while snowing all day, when i showed up at 5pm to see if the parking lot was cleaned,i could see multiple foot tracks up to the door. Not to mention there were cars abandoned on the street everywhere because they were stuck..WTF is wrong with people?..I love my customers but i swear they are sick in the head.

Re: Snow days

We closed whenever the county declared an official "snow emergency."

The girls watched the state website and let me know when the alert was posted.

Re: Snow days

Cabo...not sure where in CO you are located?

I let all new customers know that we follow the specific school district we are in for closures. If they close or have delays in that district we mirror that.

I have actually gotten complaints about being closed in a blinding blizzard if you can believe it! But safety first and I deal with the rare person that has an issue with compensation.

Luckily, Colorado Springs only got a swipe and about 12 inches, but I see around Denver and Ft Collins it was 2 feet.

Even open, it sucked for business during the storm.

Re: Snow days

Crystal,
I am in Lakewood, Co. West towards the mountains. We got alot of snow where we are located. We did benefit a bit I guess, My competator was closed for 2 days due to the storm. Well, I got a few of their clients now. lol.

I think its a great idea to follow school closings. Alot of people stayed home from work due to no sitters for kiddos as well. Thanks!

:)

Re: Snow days

We set snow days according to city schools in my area. If they do close you know it is really bad. If city schools are closed we are closed. What I have done in the past and if you have to close:
1) put message on answering machine
2) always tell customer to call before coming
3) put a sign on door closed to to weather always with a code (could be #, word, ect)
example: snowday #5

Reason: Because there are lovely clients out there that would love to rant and rave about being closed, saying they came to your salon when in fact they didnt! I put a code on the "closed due to bad weather" that way if they did risk their life coming to your salon, they would have the code and you could give them a free session!!

Since doing this I havent had a problem thus far!

Re: Snow days

If there is alot of snow in the morning I will open late! If it starts during the day and their is heavy accumulation and not many people coming in I will close early. I alway post and remind customers that if they are unsure as to if we are open in times of bad weather to call before making the trip. This is safer for them and must customer don't have aproblem with it!!!
