Merchant Service Accounts

I have spoken with some beauty salons and spa owners in my area and many have gone ahead and cancelled their merchant service accounts and have decided to go forward only accepting cash and personal checks.

Have any of you decided to go this route as well to save money?

One of my friends owns a spa and said that the savings are in the thousands.

Your thoughts?

Re: Merchant Service Accounts

Bad move since this is an electronic world we live in today. Most use some sort of card for payment these days. Having a retail establishment should accept cards as form of payment and it is more reliable than checks.

It is not expensive as long as you build the cost into the pricing then the fees are just part of doing business. You pass it on.

Re: Merchant Service Accounts

I agree with Brian. People avoid businesses that don't take credit cards so it could actually cost you much more than you think you're saving. I personally avoid businesses that don't take Amex as that is the card I primarily use.

Re: Merchant Service Accounts

I think most of our money comes in as credit. I could never do away with it. Plus there's those times when I get somewhere and realize I don't have any cash. I look around to see the Visa/Mastercard sticker somewhere, and I'm like "Whew!"

Re: Merchant Service Accounts

Im currently going through my bank for services.

the fees ive seen on competitors service companies seem better but then again there's always fine print.

im searching for cheaper alternatives to my bank is there anything I should look out for and any thing I should run away from if I decide to go with another service company?

thanks again for all feedback

Re: Merchant Service Accounts

I use a company thru costco, been using for 10 yrs, never had an issue, while I do not shop around for rates becuase I feel they have great service, in previous yrs I used to compare and no one could touch their rates. you need to be an executive member at costco for this service. here is the link http://www.elavon.com/acquiring/costco/

Re: Merchant Service Accounts

I'm not at the salon, but I will say that more than 50% of sales come through CC or debit.

I can remember the days telling clients "Oh, I'm sorry we don't accept cards yet." It did not take me long to realize the missed opportunity.

Re: Merchant Service Accounts

I found Heartland Payments systems to have some decent rates.

I recently switched to PNC merchant services. They beat Heartlands pricing.

I really hate it when a place doesn't take cc's. It's frickin' 2009, not 1984.

Re: Merchant Service Accounts

Mercury payment processing is the cheapest I have found and they don't charge a bunch of miscellaneous fees. I don't use them cause I'm stuck with whovever Helios uses for the time being.
