Question Why can't I use regular lotion?

Before going in a tanning bed, what's wrong with using something like Aveeno or Lubriderm lotion?

Re: Why can't I use regular lotion?

Well first it probably contains mineral oil or derivative of. Those react with the acrylic and do major damage. Putting it on RIGHT before does not give it time to absorb. Putting it on a few hours before is ok, there is a lot less residual.

Second, why would you? Thats like trying to wash your hair with conditioner. You need the right product. There are NO accelerants in that stuff.

A tan costs money, a good tan done right though will SAVE you money if you use the right stuff. Thats all there is to it.

It's just garbage that's why. Same reason you don't use mayonnaise as a moisturizer. Actually it'd work better than that stuff you listed.

Re: Why can't I use regular lotion?

I tell people just because it's a lotion, doesn't mean it's going to accelerate your tan. Monistat comes in a lotion and you wouldn't use that to accelerate tanning would you?

That usually makes them think...

Re: Why can't I use regular lotion?

Stop buying crappy lotions for $5 from the drug store. They are not made for tanning.

Think about it, if you were on the beach for 2 hours or in a tanning bed for 12min and it gives you the same results.....do you really think Aveeno crap will do anything for you to prepare you for that?

Thats like saying well, my car needs gas to run....so i'll fart in the tank. That's gas.....same thing. Now, why doesn't my car run?

Crappy lotions break down and do absolutely nothing where as indoor tanning lotions were made specifically to prepare your skin for the tanning session and boost your color up to 60% more and make your tan last longer by up to 60%. Aveeno is used for putting on your hands before you play with yourself. Just cuz it's a lotion, doesn't mean it's used for the same thing.

Re: Why can't I use regular lotion?

Also should I be slathering this "proper" tanning accelerator lotion on myself really thick?
Or is a smaller amount just as effective?

bah, why does it have to be so **** expensive.

Re: Why can't I use regular lotion?

Katie -

A typical bottle of lotion will last between 15 & 30 tans. So if you pay between $20 - 50 (and you can find some good lotions in this range), it is only a dollar or two per use. Since a tan costs you more than that, and you get 60% more color when you use a good lotion, it is cheaper to use lotion and tan less for the same results than to skip the lotion and have to tan more.

Also - your tanning salon probably sells tan extender lotions that are made for "moisturizing" and keeping your tan longer. These are generally less than $20. If you use something like this as your "everyday" lotion and then use your tanning accelerator when actually in the bed, you will get a much better result, and keep healthy looking, tan skin much longer. It will make the money you are spending on your tans go much further and give you a great result!

Re: Why can't I use regular lotion?

Correct. You don't have to spend top dollar either. Buy samples and mix it up. Never have to worry about dragging around a bottle or running out.

Mineral oil and the likes are a petroleum product. So is plastic/acrylic. When you combine the two they break down via chemical reaction.

With plumbing, as another example, ones uses a lubricant in the faucet for smooth operation. You have to used a silicone grease, not a petroleum based grease other wise the rubber in the faucet breaks down and the faucet can stick, leak, etc.
